Mapillai Samba is an indigenous variety of red rice, grown predominantly in Tamil Nadu. The name can be translated as “Bride Groom Rice”The origins of its name can be found in Tamil folklore. In olden days, it was essential for a man to show his bravery and strenght through many traditional sports. In one such game, the newlywed bridegroom is asked to lift a heavy rock in front of everyone to display his physical power. In order to boost the energy and stamina of the newly wed groom, he was fed with Mappillai samba rice which is known to be highly nutritional. Hence, this red rice got its name as “Mappillai Samba” and was often cooked and served to newlywed bridegrooms.
It can be cooked as rice, or made as Idli, Dosa, upma, pongal etc.
